Expectations and Opinions of Pre-service Primary Teachers Towards Teaching of Mathematics Courses

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the expectations and opinions of the pre-service primary teachers who are studying in the 2nd year of the primary teacher education undergraduate program about Teaching of Mathematics I and Teaching of Mathematics II courses in the 3rd year. For this purpose, case study design was used in qualitative research designs in the research. The study group of the research is the pre-service primary teachers who are studying in the 2nd year in the undergraduate program in 2015-2016 academic year. The purpose and study group of the study is determined in this way by examining the expectations and opinions of the pre-service teachers who have not taken Teaching of Mathematics I and II courses which are the only mathematics field education course in the undergraduate program of Primary Teacher Education. Thus courses can be more productive and beneficial. A questionnaire and interview form was used in the study in order to work as a data collection tool. In the interview form, pre-service teachers were asked about their expectations and opinions about the said courses. In the preparation of the interview form, it was benefited from the evaluation of the questionnaire form which was directed primarily to the pre-service teachers. Semi-structured interviews with pre-service teachers were conducted using the interview form. The collected data were analyzed by content analysis method. The results obtained from the research provide information about the general thinking of pre-service primary teachers towards Teaching of Mathematics I and II courses. Thus, proposals have been made for more efficient processing of Teaching of Mathematics I and II courses in undergraduate education, which is an important place for effective mathematics education at primary school level.
