Political Skill and Social Loafing Behavior of University Students

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the political skills and the perceptions of social loafing of the preservice teachers. Correlational research model was used in this study, in which the relationship between the political skills and the perceptions of social loafing of the senior students of the Faculty of Education was examined. The study group of the study consists of 442 students who are studying in the senior class of Abant Izzet Baysal University Faculty of Education in the spring semester of 2017-2018 academic year. Data of the research was collected by the ''Political Skill Scale'', which is developed by Ferris et. al. (2005) and adapted to Turkish by Özdemir and Gören (2015), and the ''Social Loafing Scale'', which is developed by Liden et. al. (2010) and adapted to Turkish by Ilgın (2010). The frequency and percentage distributions of the demographic attributes of the students in the study group were revealed. After that, arithmetic mean and standard deviation scores of the scales were calculated. Independent sample t test analysis was used to determine the change of students' political skills and social loafing perceptions according to gender. Single factor variance model was used to for unrelated samples in order to determine the changes according to the academic average. Correlation analysis technique was used to determine the relationship between students' perceptions of political skill and social loafing. Students' political skill perceptions are at "medium" level in total. The perceptions of social networking dimension, social intelligence dimension and interpersonal impact dimension, which are the sub dimensions of the political skill scale, are at ''medium'' level. The level is ''high'' in the dimension of sincerity. The social loafing perception of the students is also at ''medium'' level. There are no significant differences in the views of students regarding Political Skills and Social Loafing according to gender. There is a significant differentiation in the students’ perception of Political Skills and Social Loafing according to academic average. It is seen that there is a moderate correlation between the students' perceptions of Political Skill and Social Loafing in a negative way.
