Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the characteristics of leadership approaches (traits, behavioral, situational) with the criteria taken into account in the executive appointments in Turkey. The research was done in the screening model. In the research, the scale created by the researchers was applied in primary, secondary and high school. The sample of the study consists of 109 school managers and 541 teachers. As a result of the research, it was found that behavioral approach based qualities were the most important feature expected to be a leader. Managers and teachers argued that a leader should be sensitive to work and employees, planned and disciplined in his / her job, honest and reliable. Managers and teachers may have perceived their situational approach-based characteristics as instability or hypocrisy or inability to know what to do in the face of situations. Those who participated in the study do not see the criteria set by the ministry as a leader.
