Abstract

Smoking, alcohol consumption and misusing substances begins at childhood and is becoming more common day-by-day. The basis of acquiring these habits or taking protective measures rests within the family. Negative habits are obtained during childhood and are sustained throughout the period until adulthood. Thus, the attitudes of the family and the positive or negative assessments of adolescents about family functions are crucial. Individuals who consider family functions in a sound way are expected to display resilience and keep away from misusing cigarettes, alcohol and drug substances. The relationship between psychological resilience levels of university students and their assessments about family functions was examined in this study with respect to various variables that affect substance use. 220 university students answered the Psychological Resilience Scale and the Family Assessment Scale in the study. The study group consisted of students studying in Yıldız Technical University, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University and Süleyman Demirel University during the 2014-2015 academic years. According to the analyses, a significant difference was observed between smoking and the sub-dimensions of family functions. Smoking and alcohol consumption was observed to differ according to gender. The ANOVA statistical analysis indicated that there is a significant difference between the faculties that the students study in and family functions. However, study results showed that there are no significant differences between substance abuse and psychological resilience.
