The Factors Being Not “proper For Child” In The Stories Of Ömer Seyfettin In Terms Of Children’ Literature

Abstract

The works evaluated within the scope of children’s literature should be proper to the principle of “for child” in terms of form and content. Ömer Seyfettin, one of the pioneers of New Language movement in Turkish Literature, is remembered as children’s literature with the stories narrated by a plain language whose hero was child and that he depicted his childhood memories. You can encounter with the stories of the writer in the 100 basic works list and in Turkish Primary school lesson books. In this study, all the stories of Ömer Seyfettin (161 stories) were resolved in terms of the principle of for child. The data collected through document review in the study figured in accordance with qualitative approach were resolved with content analysis. The principle of for child was determined as the main theme for content analysis; sexuality, violence, the behaviours to create negative samples( alcoholic drink, gambling, games of chance etc.), pessimism, using slang words were determined as sub-theme. “Sentence” was accepted as the unit of analysis in the examination. As a result of the research, it was determined that negative factors such as war, death, violence, pessimism, regret, sexuality alienation, race and gender discrimination were encountered in the stories of the writer. Starting from these results, it has been being put forward that reader audience is not children since the works of Ömer Seyfettin can create negative effect on the spiritual development of children. In this regard, it is recommended that educators, parents and publishers should be sensitive about this issue.
