The Investigation of Mental Health Problems and Social Phobia Status of College Students

Abstract

The purpose of this descriptive study is to determine the mental health problems and social phobia levels of undergraduate students and examine the relationship between them. Sample group of the study consists of 139 first grade students that have started to receive education at Afyon Kocatepe University State Conservatory, Nursing Department of Health School and the School of Physical Education and Sports. The data were collected with the help of a questionnaire involving an information form, Brief Symptom Inventory and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and correlation analysis were used in analyzing the acquired data. It was determined that high school students frequently experienced the problems of depression and anxiety according to their mental symptom scores. Significant differences were determined between the mental symptom and social phobia levels of students and their departments. The nursing students were observed to have relatively higher averages compared to other departments. In addition to this, significant relationships were observed between some personal traits and mental symptom scores. Furthermore, there was a positive significant correlation between the mental symptom scores and social phobia scores of the students. Students with higher mental symptom levels were observed to experience the social phobia more.
