Abstract

University Loneliness Levels as Predictors of Violence Tendency

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between the violence tendencies and loneliness levels of university students according to various variables. This research is a relational survey model. The sample of the study consisted of 596 students studying at different faculties at Cumhuriyet University in the 2017-2018 academic year. As a data collection tool, Attitude towards Violence Scale, UCLA Loneliness Scale and Personal Information Form were used. For the analysis of research data; Descriptive statistics and One Way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and Simple Linear Regression Analysis were used. According to the results of the study, while male students' tendency of violence was found to be significantly higher than female students, it was determined that loneliness scores of the students were not significantly different according to gender. It was found that the students' violence tendency and loneliness levels did not show a significant difference according to the exposure to violence by mother. On the other hand, it was found that there was a significant relationship between the level of violence tendency of the students according to the variable of exposure to father violence and there was not a significant relationship at the level of loneliness. It was found that university students' violence tendency and loneliness level differed significantly according to witnessing parental violence variable. There was a low positive correlation between students' violent tendencies and loneliness levels. The findings were discussed with the literature.
