The Examination of Metaphoric Perception on the Effects of Heat on Substance

Abstract

The aim of this study, students in science technology course curriculum, heat the effects of substances on science concepts to reveal how it is perceived and how it is revised in 5-6-7-8th classes. For this aim, the participants are asked for completing the sentences like “expansion ....like and boiling.... like and because .....”. In this study, there are 226 students who go to secondary school (5-6-7-8th class students)in the center of Kırıkkale. In this study ıt is benefited from phenomenology. The data attained from metaphors is evaluated from content analysis. According to study findings, the students have developed 285 valid metaphors in four different categories. These are related with boiling, melt, expansion, and evaporation and condensation concepts under the topic of the effect of heat to the substances. When we analyses from the 5th class to 8th class students, they correlate with daily life, abstract concept, environment and technology. According to the results attained from the findings, this is a direct proportion between these. Based on the analysis of the metaphors in the study, the students have alternative concepts in harmony with the literature have been identified. For researchers working within the scope of suggestions were made.
