Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of defense styles and social support among adolescents. The research group was composed of 508 students attending an Anatolian High School. 278 (54.7%) of the students are female, and 230 (45.3%) of them are male. Ages of the students varied between 13 and 19. The data obtained in the research were tested with the Pearson’s Correlation and Hierarchic Regression analyses. The analyses showed that violence tendency was negatively correlated to the mature factor of defense styles, positively correlated to the immature factor, and not correlated to the neurotic defense style. Violence tendency was found negatively correlated to the perceived social support of family, positively correlated to perceived social support of a special person, and not correlated to the perceived support of friend. It was also found in the research that mature and immature defense styles significantly predicted the perceived social support of family and perceived social support of a special person. The findings were discussed in the light of the related literature.
