Investigation of Social Intelligence Levels of the Students of the Faculty of Education in terms of Some Variables

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine in terms of some variables of social intelligence levels of Sivas Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Education students. The screening model was used in the research. The research population consists of 2,296 students studying at seven departments of Faculty of Education of Sivas Cumhuriyet University in the 2017-2018 academic year. The research sample is composed of 972 students from seven departments of Faculty of Education of Sivas Cumhuriyet University. Data were collected through the Turkish version, which was made the reliability and validity studies by Doğan and Çetin (2009) of the Tromso Social Intelligence Scale (TSIS) which was developed by Silvera, Martinussen and Dahl (2001). In this context, it was determined whether students opinions related to the whole scale and “Social Information Processing”, “Social Skills”, “Social Awareness” sub-dimensions significantly differ depending on the variables of gender, department, class, number of sibling, place, parent’s education level. In the analysis of the data, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, independent samples t test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used. As a result of the research, it was determined that the students' social intelligence levels differed. Various suggestions have been made according to the findings of the research.
