Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate parents’ views about middle school math homework and extend prior research. This is a descriptive study employing the survey model. The research population consists of the parents of students attending middle schools located in a district of a province in the Eastern Anatolian Region of Turkey. The research sample includes the parents of 174 students attending three middle schools located in the said district. In the study, a survey composed of three open-ended questions was used as data collection tool. Qualitative data were subjected to content analysis. Three main themes were determined at the end of the analysis of parental views: The effect of math homework on math achievement, the follow-up of math homework by teachers, and parents’ helping with math homework. Almost all parents opined that math homework promotes students’ math achievement and math homework should be followed up by teachers. But, the analysis of parental views about helping with math homework yielded both positive and negative views. With regard to research findings, suggestions were offered for future studies by emphasizing the necessity for creates a math homework policy.
