Abstract

Refugee children who had to migrate to Turkey as a result of the civil war in Syria are trying to continue their education in Turkish schools. It is quite challenging for refugee children, who have to attend school in a new and different society, to make themselves accepted in the environment they are in and to look to the future with hope. This research is a quantitative study investigating the school belonging and hope levels of Syrian students in school sports teams. The research group consists of 295 Syrian students studying in secondary schools. "Hope Scale for Children" and " Sense of School Belonging Scale " were used to collect data. The collected data were analyzed with quantitative analysis methods using the Jamovi program. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the school belonging and hope levels of the Syrian students in the school sports team were higher than the Syrian students who were not in the school team, and it was found that school belonging positively predicted the level of hope in a significant way. In addition, if Syrian students take part in school sports teams, the effect of school belonging on hope levels increases. As a result, it can be said that the application of sports-based approaches in which refugee students are included in order to increase the sense of school belonging and hope levels can play an important role in the process.
