Communication Skills of Secondary School Students and Their Attitudes Towards Social Studies Course

Abstract

Tutum, bireyin bir nesneye olaya ya da duruma yönelik eğilimleridir. Haberleşme, bilgilendirme ve bilgilerin anlamlandırılması anlamına gelen iletişim ise Sosyal Bilgiler dersinin becerilerinden biridir. Bu araştırmada, ortaokul öğrencilerinin Sosyal Bilgiler dersine karşı tutumları ile iletişim becerileri arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Karma yöntem şeklinde tasarlanan araştırmanın nicel kısmında Ersanlı ve Balcı (1998) tarafından geliştirilen “İletişim Becerileri Envanteri” ile Demir ve Akengin (2010) tarafından geliştirilen “Sosyal Bilgiler Dersine Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın nitel verileri ise yapılandırılmış görüşme formuyla elde edilmiştir. Araştırmanın nicel kısmına 450 ortaokul öğrencisi katılırken nitel kısmına ise 45 ortaokul öğrencisi katılmıştır. Nicel veriler bağımsız gruplar için t testi, tek yönlü ANOVA, scheffe testi, betimsel istatistik, korelasyon ile; nitel veriler ise içerik analiz yoluyla çözümlenmiştir. Araştırmada öğrencilerin iletişim becerileri ile cinsiyetleri arasında farklılaşmanın kız öğrencilerin lehine olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Öğrencilerin okudukları okul değişkenine göre iletişim becerileri düzeyleri değişkenlik göstermektedir. Sosyo-ekonomik düzeye göre seçilen okullardan düzeyi daha düşük olan okulun daha yüksek iletişim becerisi gösterdiği görülmektedir. Öğrencilerin iletişim becerileri sınıf düzeyi değişkenine göre incelendiğinde, alt sınıflarla üst sınıflar arasında alt sınıfın lehine bir farklılaşmanın olduğu görülmektedir. Öğrencilerin Sosyal Bilgiler dersine yönelik tutumları ile cinsiyetleri arasında anlamlı bir farklılık bulunamamıştır. Ancak öğrencilerin okudukları okul değişkenine göre Sosyal Bilgiler dersine yönelik tutumlarının değişkenlik gösterdiği görülmektedir. Öğrencilerin sınıf düzeylerinin Sosyal Bilgiler dersine ilişkin tutumlarında herhangi bir etkisi tespit edilememiştir. Araştırmanın nitel kısmında ise öğrenciler Sosyal Bilgiler dersine yönelik olumlu tutuma sahip olduklarını ve Sosyal Bilgiler dersinin iletişim becerisi kazandırabilecek bir ders olduğunu belirtmişlerdir.

Abstract

Attitude is a whole of tendencies of the individual towards a situation, a circumstance or an object. Communication, which means the imparting or exchanging of information and also making sense of information, is one of the skills within the scope of Social Studies course. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the relationship between the communication skills of secondary school students and their attitudes towards Social Studies course. 450 secondary school students participated in the quantitative part of the study, while 45 secondary school students participated in the qualitative part. It was found that the difference between the communication skills of students and their gender was in favor of female students. It was seen that the school with lower socio-economic status had higher level of communication skill, among the schools selected according to socio-economic status. When the communication skills of students were analyzed as based on the grade level variable, a difference between the low and high grades was determined in favor of the low grade. No significant difference between the attitudes of students towards Social Studies course and their gender was found. However, it was seen that their attitudes towards Social Studies course varied by the school.No effect of grade levels on the attitudes towards Social Studies course that were displayed by the students could be determined.In the qualitative part of the study, students stated that they had positive attitude towards Social Studies course and Social Studies was a course which could enable them to acquire communication skills.
