Analyzing the Relationship Between School Bullying and Perceived Self-Concept Clarity in Adolescents

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between school bullying and self-concept clarity in adolescents. This study also aims to analyze the levels of school bullying and self-concept clarity in adolescents according to some variables. The study group consists of 313 high school students in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades during 2008-2009 academic year. In this study, Student Relationships Attitude Scale (SRAS) developed by Koc (2006) and Self-Concept Clarity Scale developed by Campbell, Trapnell, Heine, Kartz, Lavallee ve Lehman (1996) and adapted to Turkish by Sumer and Gungor (1999a) were used. T-test and one way anova were used to analyze the data. It was found that there was a significant difference in subscale points of avoidance from bullying and bullying personality of SRAS according to gender; however there was not a significant difference in the subscale points of self confidence subscale. It was determined that there was a significant difference in the subscale points of bullying personality and self confidence of SRAS according to the mother's attitude; however there was not a significant difference in the subscale points of avoidance from bullying. It was found that there was a significant difference in the subscale points of bullying personality and avoidance from bullying of SRAS according to the father's attitude; however there was not a significant difference in the subscale points of self confidence. It was found that there was a significant difference in self-concept clarity according to the mother and father's attitude. It was observed that there was a significant correlation between the bullying personality subscale point of SRAS and Self-Concept Clarity Scale. It was observed that there was not a significant correlation between the self confidence and avoidance from bullying subscale points of SRAS and Self-Concept Clarity Scale.
